Birte Larsen
b. 1966, Fynen, Denmark
Lives and works in the Southern Highlands, NSW, Australia

Birte Larsen is an observational artist working across a multitude of disciplines and materials.

Larsen sees the extraordinary in the mundane and focusses in on the everyday while often drawing on personal history and her cultural heritage. Larsen admires the detail in the natural and discarded materials and often incorporates these into her work through focussing on the unique patterns as well as the material significance. Larsen loves to be the conduit between what was and what is going to be. The prior use or history of the material gives great inspiration and the quantity of the material collected or grown, dictates the scale and number of works that are made. Larsen’s Danish heritage has contributed to both her process and material selection as well as her overall philosophy and aesthetic sensibility.

Larsen lives and works to the mantra: Do what you can, where you are with what you have!
